Paneer Kaliya

Paneer Kaliya

Kaliya in Bengali means a rich preparation with khada masala and onions. Maacher Kaliya is a fish preparation which is usually prepared on special occasions when guests are coming over. This is a vegetarian version of the kaliya dish. It has an unusual combination of taste combining almond and roasted chana dal.

Ingredients

200 gm paneer
½ cup almonds, ground
¼ cup chana dal
2 onions, sliced
1” ginger, chopped
4 tbsp ghee
3 green cardamoms
1” cinnamon
3 cloves
1 tbsp peppercorns
2 tbsp coriander seeds
1 tsp turmeric powder
½ cup milk

Dry roast the chana dal and grind it. Grind the almonds. Heat half the ghee.
Add cardamom, cinnamon, cloves and pepper. Add the ginger and onions.
Add the coriander seeds. Saute for some time. Switch off the heat and cool a bit. Grind it to a rough paste.
Heat rest of the ghee. Fry the ground paste.
Add the almond powder. Saute.
Mix the chana dal powder with a little water and add to the gravy. Add the turmeric powder.
Slowly add the milk stirring all the while. When it comes to a boil add the paneer pieces and salt. Cover and cook for 5 minutes.
