Cheat’s Murg Biryani

Cheat’s Murg Biryani

There are so many biryani recipes that people have written books on the topic. Every region has its own version using locally available products. The spices, condiments, flavoring changes likewise.

Biryani making is a labour of love. However there are times when you are too tired to go through the whole rigmarole.

Frankly speaking this cheat’s biryani is a labour saving recipe. First of all it is cooked in an automatic rice cooker which provides a different kind of ‘dum’ than the one cooked in a handi. Secondly I have skipped all the parboiling and marinating because the idea is to save time.

Remember chicken is a very flavourful ingredient and whatever you do with it the result is always good. In fact I remember an aunt of mine just throwing raw chicken pieces, ginger, garlic, roughly chopped onion and tomato, salt and garam masala and giving two whistles in the cooker. And the dish would be amaaaaazing!!

So go ahead and cheat !!!

Ingredients

500 gm chicken
1 ½ cups rice
2 green cardamom
Small piece of cinnamon
4 peppercorns
2 onions, chopped
6 garlic pods, chopped
Small piece of ginger, chopped
4 tbsp curd
1 tsp garam masala powder
Salt to taste
½ cup chopped fresh green coriander

Wash and soak the rice while you prepare the chicken.
Heat some oil and add the cardamoms, cinnamon and peppercorns. Add the ginger and garlic and sauté. Add the chopped onion and fry till the onions become translucent.

Add the garam masala and curd. Sauté for a minute or two.

Now add the chicken and fry on high flame for about 5 minutes.

Keep stirring otherwise the chicken will start burning. Season with salt and add the chopped coriander.

Sprinkle some water, cover and cook for 5-7 minutes. you don’t have to cook the chicken fully because it is going to be cooked in the rice cooker. The idea is to coat the chicken well with the masala.

Heat the rice cooker. Add some ghee. Drain the rice and put in the cooker. Fry for few minutes so that the rice has a fried look.

Now add the chicken and any gravy that might be in the pan. Stir well.

Add water according to the rice cooker instructions. For 1 ½ cup rice I usually add about 2 ¾ cups water.

Now sit back and relax. Or go around finishing your chores. The biryani will be ready in about 15 minutes.
